Dual citizenship and permanent residencyOn May 20, the State Duma adopted a new law introducing criminal liability for the Russian citizens concealing their citizenship in another country. An exception has been made for the Russians permanently living abroad.

The document amends the law "On Citizenship of the Russian Federation" making it a requirement that the Russian citizen who also have another nationality must, within 60 days from the date of acquiring another citizenship, notify in writing the local FMS (Federal Migration Service.)

A failure to do so is a criminal offense punishable by a fine of up to 200 thousand rubles. or the salary or other income for a period of up to one year, or in the form of compulsory labor for up to 400 hours.

Attention Russian North Carolina residents or any other Russians living in the US

During the second reading of the draft the law has been amended. Now the Russians with a foreign citizenship permanent residency abroad do not have to report their second citizenship. Thus, an exception was made for the "Russian citizens permanently living outside of Russia, who also have another citizenship or residence permit, or other document which confirms his right to permanent residence in a foreign country".
