For the first time in North Carolina history, a professional team from our state wins a national championship. Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup.

The Carolina Hurricanes are the 2006 NHL Stanley Cup Champs after defeating the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in Raleigh at the RBC Center on Monday night. The series went to Game 7 and a final chance for the 'Canes to pull out a victory at home. Frantisek Kaberle scored the game-winning goal. Consistent play help push Carolina past the Oilers. The team scored a goal in each period. Goaltender Cam Ward performed flawlessly and Aaron Ward, Frantisek Kaberle and Justin Williams scored to give Carolina a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of the NHL's championship series. Fernando Pisani scored in the third period for Edmonton. The Oilers played gave it their all but came up short.
