Visitors to North Carolina spent $16.9 billion in 2008.  The state took the sixth spot among the most popular tourist destinations.

Travelers to the state spent 2.1% more than in 2007, according to U.S. Travel Association.  The overall increase in the money spent by tourists in North Carolina is 27.3% over the last five years.  Tax and employment data was used to come up with the figures.

According to another source, TNS Travels America, North Carolina is in the 6th place among visitors in 2008.  Florida is the most popular travel destination, followed by California, New York, Nevada and Pennsylvania.  In 2007 North Carolina was in the 7th place among visitors.
