North Carolina City of Mount Holly Police Department is investigating the death of Irina Yarmolenko, 20 year old UNC Charlotte student.
Irina's body was found on the bank of Catawba River in Mount Holly on Monday next to her Saturn. Mount Holly, NC, is located 30 miles from the UNC Charlotte campus.
Evidently Irina's vehicle struck a stump next to the river. The police are investigating since the vehicle ended up half a mile away from the closest paved road. There is no evident connection between Irina and the town of Mount Holly. The Mount Holly PD is joined by the FBI and SBI in their investigation.
No evidence of vehicle break-in, alcohol or drugs has been found.
Yarmolenko was from Chapel Hill and began her studies at UNC Charlotte last fall. She was a campus newspaper reporter and photographer, as well as a member of the Russian Club.
Irina was last seen on campus Monday at 9:15 am. Police are trying to locate witnesses who have seen her after that. Mount Holly PD phone number is 704-827-4343.
