It's been a year and half since a group of 20 Russian college students came to North Carolina on a U.S. Congress program. What is their impression of our state? Hard to understand American- in particular southern - English. Impressed with the education system.
About the English language
In spite of the fact that prior to their coming to US the Russians studied English they couldn't avoid some problems with the language. North Carolina version of English proved to be somewhat difficult, as in the very beginning the students couldn't understand anything but the language spoken by college professors. Then came TV programs and American movies which aided the Russians' study of the language. Now, a year and a half later, the Southern language became their second native. They no longer mumble to themselves under a nose, and speak
loudly and confidently and have already learned to use American slang.
About American Education
At first the American education system amazed the Russian students.
But in due course they got used and adapted to it.
Some of the better things about the American education is the fact that it tends to be more practical, as opposed to a purely theoretical. Each thesis is
accompanied by real examples, the facts from history of the American
business. All figures which are brought up in lectures are real.
Another difference is the fact that, unlike in Russia, Americans do not use oral examinations. Everything is done in written form, as in essays and tests. Cheating and copying is strictly forbidden. Being caught in the act might cause a student to be expelled.
There are, however, notable exceptions to the overall superiority of the American education. For example in Russia students are taught how to think, whereas in America they are taught how to do.
