On July 24 during a take off from Hickory Regional Airport, a restored F-86 fighter jet crashed and killed its pilot.
The plane was a part of the airplane collection of a local businessman Wyatt Fuller. Fuller was piloting the plane himself when it crashed within 100 feet from the runway at Hickory Regional Airport. Fuller was headed to an airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. FAA is investigating.
Information:
The North American F-86 Sabre was a subsonic combat aircraft developed for the US Air Force. The F-86 was developed in the 1940s following the end of WWII and was one of the most-produced western jet fighters.
The F-86 entered service with the United States Air Force in 1949, joining the 1st Fighter Wing's 94th Fighter Squadron "Hat-in-the-Ring" and became the primary air-to-air jet fighter used in the Korean War.
It's chief counterpart was MiG-15, piloted mostly by the Soviet officers during the war. According to the Soviet sources, MiGs shot down over 1300 American planes during the Korean War, 650 of which were F-86's. USAF data shows that the total number of F-86 involved in the war amounted to 650.
F-86s were primarily used by the US, French, Portuguese, Pakistani and Argentine air forces.
Mr. Fuller's jet figther was served in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
